The Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge is a long cable-stayed road bridge spanning the Suriname River, linking Paramaribo with the district of Commewijne on the eastern bank. Opened in 2000, its slender pylons and sweeping deck rise high above the water to allow ships to pass beneath toward the harbour. Before its construction, crossings depended on ferries, and the bridge transformed travel between the capital and the plantations across the river. Its modern silhouette contrasts with the colonial architecture of the old city it serves.
