The Neveh Shalom Synagogue in Paramaribo is a wooden synagogue serving one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Americas, whose presence in Suriname dates to the seventeenth century. Notable for standing directly beside a mosque in a display of religious coexistence, the building has a sand-covered floor in a tradition recalling the community's history. Its timber construction reflects the local colonial style. The neighbouring synagogue and mosque are often cited as a symbol of Suriname's diverse society.
