The Keizerstraat Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the Caribbean region, serving Paramaribo's substantial Muslim community of largely Javanese and Hindustani descent. Its white minarets and green domes rise beside the historic Neveh Shalom Synagogue, and the two houses of worship sharing a wall have become an internationally noted image of interfaith tolerance. The mosque reflects the religious plurality created by indentured migration to the Dutch colony. Its position in the old city underlines Suriname's multicultural character.
