The Palmentuin is a historic public garden in central Paramaribo, laid out behind the Presidential Palace as an avenue of tall royal palms rising above shaded lawns. Dating from the colonial period, it offers a cool, green retreat in the heart of the old city, popular with families and strollers. Troops of small monkeys and tropical birds inhabit the canopy overhead. The stately rows of palms and quiet paths make it one of the most tranquil corners of the historic centre and a favourite place to escape the heat.
