The Presidential Palace of Suriname is a white colonial mansion facing Independence Square in the historic centre of Paramaribo. Dating in its present form to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the wooden and stuccoed building served as the residence of Dutch colonial governors before becoming the seat of the head of state. Its wide veranda, shuttered windows and formal proportions typify the Dutch colonial architecture that gives the old city its character. Behind it lies the shaded Palm Garden, extending the palace grounds.
