Wooden colonial facades line the streets of Paramaribo, Suriname's capital on the tropical Atlantic edge of South America. Laid out by the Dutch across the 17th and 18th centuries, the historic core keeps its distinctive original street grid, and its buildings show how European design gradually merged with local craft traditions and materials. UNESCO added the inner city to the World Heritage List in 2002 as an exceptional record of that colonial encounter.
