The Museo de Antioquia is one of Colombia's oldest museums, occupying a monumental Art Deco building in central Medellín that formerly served as the municipal palace. Its collections range from pre-Columbian and colonial pieces to modern Colombian art, with an especially large holding of works by Fernando Botero, who was born in the city. The adjoining plaza displays his rotund bronze sculptures in the open air. Together the museum and square form a central cultural anchor for visitors exploring downtown Medellín.
