An affluent hillside suburb above Port-au-Prince, founded in the early nineteenth century and named for an independence-era president. Cooler than the coastal centre, it grew into the commercial and diplomatic hub of the metropolitan area, with restaurants, galleries, hotels and a central square anchored by a church. Craft markets sell paintings and metalwork by Haitian artists. Its elevated position offers views over the capital, and it functions today as one of the principal gathering places for visitors and the city's professional community.
