The Iron Market, an emblematic downtown bazaar housed under an ornate red iron-and-glass structure with clock towers and minaret-like spires, originally manufactured in Europe and erected in the late nineteenth century. For generations it has been the commercial heart of the capital, its aisles crowded with vendors selling produce, crafts, spices and vodou goods. Badly damaged in the 2010 earthquake, it was restored and reopened, its distinctive silhouette once again marking the centre of Port-au-Prince trade and daily life.
