The national library of Honduras occupies a historic building in central Tegucigalpa near the cathedral and central plaza. Founded in the nineteenth century, it preserves rare books, newspapers and documents chronicling the nation's history and literature. The reading rooms serve students and researchers, and the institution safeguards part of the country's documentary heritage. Its downtown location places it among the cluster of civic and cultural buildings at the heart of the capital.
