Honduras's national theatre in downtown Tegucigalpa opened in 1915 and was modelled on the Athenee Theatre of Paris. Its intimate horseshoe auditorium is decorated with painted ceilings, ornamental plasterwork and tiered boxes in the European tradition. Named for a former president, it hosts concerts, plays and civic ceremonies and remains a centrepiece of the capital's cultural calendar. The building stands among the historic streets near the cathedral and central plaza.
