Halifax City Hall is an ornate Victorian sandstone building fronting the Grand Parade, completed in 1890 in the Second Empire style with a prominent clock tower. Its richly detailed façade, mansard roofs and carved ornament reflect the civic pride of a prosperous port city. The clock on the tower's north face has famously remained stopped at the time of a historic maritime tragedy. The building continues to serve as the seat of municipal government and closes the northern end of the city's central square.
