The Grand Parade is a historic public square in the centre of Halifax, laid out shortly after the city's founding in 1749 as a military drilling and gathering ground. It is bounded at one end by the ornate Victorian City Hall and at the other by Saint Paul's Church, the oldest building in the city. A war memorial cenotaph rises at its centre, the focus of remembrance ceremonies. Concerts, markets and civic events still fill the terraced square, which steps down the slope toward the harbour.
