Across from the capitol in Oklahoma City, this large museum interprets the state's history through galleries on Native nations, land runs, the oil boom, aviation, and the Dust Bowl. An aircraft hangs in the atrium, and outdoor grounds include an oil derrick and a re-created homestead. The center gives significant attention to the many tribes forcibly relocated to Indian Territory and the state's African American communities. Interactive displays and an extensive research library make it both a museum and an archive of Oklahoma's past.
