This art museum in a residential part of northwest Washington occupies a modernist mansion designed by architect Philip Johnson. Built in the 1960s as the home of David and Carmen Kreeger, its travertine walls and domed rooms were conceived to display their collection of Impressionist and modern paintings. Works by Monet, Picasso, and others hang in domestic-scale galleries, complemented by African and Asian art and a sculpture garden on the wooded grounds.
