A national war memorial and cemetery set on a hillside a short distance south of Windhoek, honouring those who fell in the struggle for independence. Inaugurated in 2002, its terraced granite plaza is dominated by a tall obelisk and a bronze statue of an unknown soldier, with a marble frieze depicting the liberation war. Rows of graves and cenotaphs commemorate national heroes. Approached by a long ceremonial stairway, the monument commands a broad view over the surrounding hills and is used for state remembrance ceremonies.
