The country's principal museum of natural and cultural history, with displays split between the historic Alte Feste fort and a modern building in central Windhoek. Its collections cover the geology, wildlife, archaeology and ethnography of the region, including exhibits on the many peoples of the territory and on the independence struggle. Mounted animals, rock-art reproductions and artefacts interpret the arid southwest. The museum is a centre for research and public education about the nation's heritage.
