The oldest surviving building in Windhoek, a whitewashed fort built by the German colonial forces from 1890 as their headquarters in the territory. Its thick walls and corner towers overlook the city centre near Christ Church, and it later served as a school and then a museum. The fort's ramparts recall the era of colonial conquest and the wars against the Herero and Nama peoples. Set among gardens with historic artillery pieces, it is a key landmark for understanding the origins of the modern capital.
