This museum in Omdurman occupies the restored residence of Khalifa Abdullahi, the successor to the Mahdi who ruled Sudan until the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of 1898. Standing opposite the Mahdi's Tomb, the mud-brick house displays weapons, banners, manuscripts and relics from the Mahdist state and its wars. Exhibits recount the rise and fall of the movement and the pivotal Battle of Omdurman. As one of Sudan's oldest museums, it offers a vivid record of a defining period in the country's history.
