This sprawling market in Omdurman is one of the largest and most famous in Sudan, a maze of stalls selling spices, textiles, gold, silverwork, leather goods and traditional crafts. Distinct sections specialise in particular trades, from ebony carvings to Nubian jewellery. The souq has served as a commercial heart of the country since the Mahdist era and remains a magnet for both residents and visitors. Its bustling lanes offer an immersive picture of Sudanese trade, craftsmanship and daily life.
