This island sits at the very confluence of the Blue and White Niles, opposite central Khartoum, where the two great rivers merge. Long inhabited by farming communities, it retains a village character of small fields, palm groves and traditional houses within sight of the capital's skyline. A suspension bridge now links it to the city. Known as the garden of Khartoum, the island offers a striking contrast between rural life and the surrounding metropolis at one of Africa's most famous river junctions.
