This domed mausoleum in Omdurman holds the remains of Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi who led the nineteenth-century revolt against Egyptian and British rule and captured Khartoum in 1885. The original tomb was destroyed by Anglo-Egyptian forces after the Battle of Omdurman in 1898 and later rebuilt, its silver dome now a prominent landmark. Adjacent stands the house of the Khalifa, the Mahdi's successor, preserved as a museum. The site remains a focus of Sudanese national and religious memory.
