This grand central post office is among the most recognisable buildings of downtown Algiers, an early twentieth-century landmark in the Neo-Moorish style that fused European planning with Arab-Andalusian ornament. Horseshoe arches, carved stucco and a soaring domed hall lend it the air of a palace rather than a civic office. It gives its name to the surrounding square and metro station and remains a busy meeting point in the modern city. The facade is a favourite subject for photographers of colonial-era Algiers.
