The Djamaa el Djedid, or New Mosque, overlooks the harbour of Algiers near the Place des Martyrs and dates from 1660, built during Ottoman rule. Its plan is unusual for the Maghreb, arranged as a cross beneath a large central dome flanked by smaller cupolas, showing Anatolian and possibly European influence. A tall square minaret in the local tradition rises alongside. Whitewashed and prominently sited by the waterfront, it remains one of the principal Ottoman-era mosques of the Algerian capital.
