Whitewashed houses tumble downhill toward the Mediterranean in the Kasbah of Algiers, a medina raised on slopes overlooking the islets where Carthaginians traded from the 4th century BC. Behind blank street walls hide courtyards, Ottoman-style palaces and old mosques; above stands the citadel from which the city was ruled. The quarter keeps its dense urban fabric and deep-rooted community life, and UNESCO inscribed the Kasbah in 1992.
