Fes el-Jdid, meaning New Fes, is the second walled quarter of the city, founded in the thirteenth century by the Marinid dynasty as a royal and administrative district beside the older medina. Within its ramparts lie the royal palace complex, the historic Jewish mellah, mosques and long straight streets that contrast with the tangled lanes of Fes el-Bali. Green spaces and old water gardens once served the palace. Part of the UNESCO site, it preserves the layout of a medieval seat of power and feels calmer than the older medina.
