Cap Spartel is a dramatic headland west of Tangier, marking the northwestern corner of Africa where the Atlantic Ocean meets the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. A nineteenth-century lighthouse, built in the 1860s under an international agreement, stands on the cliffs and remains an active navigational aid. Panoramic viewpoints look out toward the coast of Spain on clear days. The surrounding pine-clad slopes and nearby beaches make it a popular excursion from the city, often combined with a visit to the shore caves below.
