This old neighbourhood on the Golden Horn was historically home to Jewish, Greek and Armenian communities, and it retains a dense fabric of colourful timber and stone houses climbing narrow streets. Synagogues, churches and small mosques stand close together, reflecting centuries of cosmopolitan settlement. In recent years its steep lanes and painted façades have drawn photographers, antique dealers and cafés, giving the once-neglected district new life. Walking here reveals crumbling mansions, hidden courtyards and views over the inlet.
