Also known as the Fethiye Museum, this Byzantine church in the Çarşamba quarter preserves some of the finest late-medieval mosaics in the city after those of the Chora. Built in the eleventh and twelfth centuries and expanded with a funerary chapel around 1310, it briefly held the Orthodox Patriarchate after the conquest before becoming a mosque. The parekklesion chapel is now a museum, its dome showing Christ Pantocrator amid prophets on gold ground. The quiet neighbourhood adds to the sense of discovery.
