This imposing red-brick building crowning a hill above the Golden Horn is one of the most striking landmarks of the Fener district and the home of a Greek Orthodox school with roots reaching back centuries. The present grand structure, completed in the late nineteenth century, rises in a castle-like silhouette topped by a great dome, earning it the local nickname of the red castle. Long a leading institution for the city's Greek community, it still educates a small number of students. Its dramatic profile dominates the old Christian quarter.
