The Garden Tomb is a rock-cut tomb set in a tranquil garden just north of the Old City walls of Jerusalem, near the Damascus Gate. Identified in the 19th century as a possible alternative site of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus, it is favoured by many Protestant pilgrims as a place of worship and reflection. The nearby rocky escarpment, thought by some to resemble a skull, gave rise to the association with Golgotha. Maintained as a quiet green refuge, the site offers a contrast to the crowded churches within the walls.
