The Beirut Souks are a modern shopping district built on the site of the city's historic markets, destroyed during the civil war. Reopened in stages from 2009, the development follows the old street pattern, incorporating archaeological remains and a restored Ottoman clock. Alongside international boutiques it includes a gold souk, restaurants, and a cinema. Criticised by some for replacing the traditional bazaar with upscale retail, it is now a central commercial hub where fragments of ancient Berytus survive among the shops.
