The Saint George Maronite Cathedral stands in downtown Beirut beside the great blue-domed mosque, its neoclassical façade and bell tower a familiar pairing on the edge of Martyrs' Square. Built in the 19th century and modelled on Italian Renaissance churches, it is the seat of the Maronite archeparchy of the capital. The interior holds ornate altars, paintings, and a crypt with archaeological remains uncovered beneath the church. Damaged repeatedly in the city's conflicts, it has been restored and remains a centre of Maronite worship.
