The Saint Nicholas Stairs, also known as the Escalier de l'Art, are a long stone staircase linking the Gemmayzeh and Achrafieh districts of Beirut. Dating from the French Mandate period, the steps climb between old townhouses on a shaded pedestrian route through a characterful neighbourhood. In recent years they have hosted open-air art fairs and festivals. The stairway has become a symbol of Beirut's creative side and a popular subject for photographers exploring the eastern quarters.
