A vast limestone stairway rising up a hillside in central Yerevan, conceived in the Soviet era and later completed as a striking piece of urban design. Its terraces, fountains and sculpture-filled courtyards climb toward a monument marking the anniversary of Soviet Armenia, offering sweeping views over the city toward Mount Ararat. Inside, escalators ascend past galleries of a contemporary art centre displaying modern sculpture and painting. The Cascade has become a favourite gathering place, its lower gardens dotted with outdoor artworks.
