The central square of the Armenian capital, laid out in the early 20th century as the showpiece of a comprehensive plan to rebuild Yerevan. It is framed by monumental buildings faced in pink and yellow tufa stone, housing government ministries, a grand hotel and the national history and art museums. At its heart lies an oval with musical fountains that perform in the evenings. The square serves as the symbolic centre of the country, the setting for national celebrations, ceremonies and public gatherings.
