A leafy central park in Almaty named after a Soviet division of soldiers from the region, containing shaded avenues, a war memorial and an eternal flame. At its heart stands a colourful wooden cathedral, and the park's paths draw walkers, families and cyclists throughout the day. Monuments commemorating those lost in the Second World War give the grounds a solemn as well as recreational character. The mature trees provide welcome cool during Almaty's warm summers.
