The main civic square of Almaty, framed by government buildings and dominated by the Independence Monument at its centre. Laid out during the Soviet era and later remodelled, it has hosted parades, rallies and national celebrations, and remains a gathering point during major holidays. The tall monument column is topped by a figure of the Golden Man warrior, with relief walls depicting scenes from Kazakh history around its base. Wide open paving and fountains make it a popular strolling ground.
