The principal art museum of Kazakhstan, located in Almaty and named after the pioneering Kazakh painter Abilkhan Kasteyev. Its galleries hold the country's most important collection of national fine art, alongside Russian, Western European and Asian works, decorative arts and traditional crafts. The museum traces the development of Kazakh painting and applied art across the twentieth century and beyond. Rotating exhibitions and a permanent survey make it a central institution for the visual arts in the country.
