One of the oldest and largest museums in the country, based in Almaty in a distinctive blue-domed building. Its collections span archaeology, ethnography, and the history of the Kazakh peoples from prehistoric times to the present, including nomadic artefacts, weaponry, jewellery and reconstructions of traditional dwellings. A celebrated replica of the Golden Man warrior in his gilded armour is among its highlights. The museum offers a broad introduction to the region's cultural heritage for first-time visitors.
