Erected on Republic Square in Almaty to mark Kazakhstan's independence, this tall column is crowned by a statue of the winged Golden Man standing on a snow leopard. Its base is surrounded by bronze relief walls that portray episodes from the country's long history, from ancient nomads to the modern republic. The monument became a focal point for national identity and public assembly after independence. Visitors often read the accompanying inscriptions before circling the reliefs.
