Tay Kak Sie is a richly decorated Chinese temple in the Chinatown quarter of Semarang, founded in the eighteenth century and dedicated to a host of Taoist and Buddhist deities. Its ornate halls, thick with incense smoke, are crowded with statues, lanterns and gilded carvings, while dragon-topped roofs and intricate woodwork reflect the wealth of the Chinese trading community that built it. The temple remains an active centre of worship, busy during Chinese festivals when processions set out from its gates.
