The old town of Semarang, nicknamed the Little Netherlands, is a compact district of Dutch colonial buildings that once formed the walled trading centre of the port city. Cobbled streets wind past former banks, offices and warehouses, many now restored as cafes, galleries and museums, centred on the domed Blenduk Church. Old canals and the ornate Spiegel building recall the commercial life of the colonial era. After years of neglect and flooding, the quarter has been revitalised and lit at night, becoming one of the best-preserved colonial.
