Tugu Muda, the Youth Monument, is a tall stone pillar at a major junction in Semarang commemorating the Five Day Battle of 1945, when the city's young fighters resisted Japanese troops in the closing days of the war. The candle-shaped column, decorated with reliefs depicting scenes of struggle and sacrifice, rises from a landscaped roundabout ringed by important buildings, including the historic Lawang Sewu. The monument is a focus of civic ceremonies and remembrance.
