The Great Mosque of Central Java in Semarang is a vast modern complex completed in 2006, blending Javanese, Islamic and classical architectural influences. Its most striking feature is a courtyard of six enormous retractable umbrellas, inspired by those at Medina, that unfold to shade worshippers gathered outside the prayer hall. A tall tower on the grounds houses a viewing deck, a small museum and a revolving restaurant offering panoramas of the city.
