The Mpu Tantular State Museum, on the southern edge of Surabaya, is the principal museum of East Java, named after the medieval poet who composed the work from which Indonesia's national motto is drawn. Its wide-ranging collection includes prehistoric artefacts, Hindu-Buddhist statuary, colonial machinery, coins, ceramics and ethnographic objects from across the province. Highlights include early bicycles, historic scientific instruments and a hall devoted to technology.
