Kembang Jepun is the historic Chinatown of Surabaya, a district whose narrow streets grew from the trading community that settled around the old port. Rows of ageing shophouses, temples and family businesses recall a commercial quarter that once bustled with merchants of Chinese, Arab and European origin. In the evenings part of the street, known as Kya-Kya, transforms into a lively food and market area where vendors serve regional and Chinese-Indonesian dishes.
