The Heroes Monument is the great landmark of Surabaya, a tapering column more than forty metres tall raised to honour those who died in the fierce Battle of Surabaya in November 1945, when the city resisted returning colonial forces. The fluted concrete obelisk, ringed by arches representing the date, stands in a broad plaza in the city centre. Beneath it a museum tells the story of the uprising through dioramas, weapons and recordings of the defiant radio speeches that rallied the fighters.
