The Al-Akbar National Mosque is the great mosque of Surabaya and one of the largest in Indonesia, completed in 2000 on the southern side of the city. Its vast blue dome, flanked by smaller cupolas and a single soaring minaret, dominates the surrounding district, and the prayer hall can hold tens of thousands of worshippers. Visitors may ride a lift to a viewing gallery high on the minaret for a sweeping panorama over the metropolis.
