Quiapo Church, formally the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, is one of the most heavily visited churches in Manila and a centre of intense popular devotion. It enshrines a dark wooden image of Christ carrying the cross, brought from Mexico in the 17th century and believed by many to work miracles. Each January a vast procession of barefoot devotees jostles to touch the statue in one of the country's largest religious gatherings. The surrounding district teems with market stalls selling herbs, candles, and religious goods.
